Am I correct about the difference between (abate) and (debilitate)?

Abate means to lessen in intensity. Debilitate means to weaken. People don't abate; storms do, emotions do. You might say: "He waited for her anger to abate before he started to clarify." And, "Their daily fights had a debilitating effect on their relationship." Or just use weakened.
