You have 7 choices from group 1, 7 choices from group 2, etc. Your choice from each group is independent of the choice from any other group. If you had only two groups, it would be easy to list all of the 7 * 7 = 7^2 combinations. It is harder to list the total number of combinations for nine groups, but the principle for computing how many is the same. The number is 7 ^ 9 = 7 * 7 * 7 * 7 * 7 * 7 * 7 * 7 * 7.
