Should you stamp your mail before sending it abroad?

I'm sending a letter through the Royal Mail from the UK to the Netherlands. I put a second class stamp on it. I'm then going to take it to the post office to be weighed and get an airmail sticker. Is this right? I don't know if I need the second class stamp or not..
