What did i do to my side?

i was laying on my stomach and when i went to lift up to turn over to my back and i heard and felt a crack in my upper left side. when it happened the pain was almost debilitating. now, i cannot take a deep breath without being in pain and if i put my arm all the way in the air, it hurts then also. what happened?
